Where Do I Start With a Kitchen Remodel?

Remodeling your kitchen is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. Before you start scrolling Pinterest or calling contractors, take a little time to plan. The homeowners who prepare up front usually have a smoother experience and end up with a kitchen they truly love.

Quick Checklist to Get Started

  • Define why you want a remodel

  • List your Must Have, Should Have, and Could Have items

  • Take measurements of your space

  • Decide on your budget range

  • Collect style inspiration photos

  • Meet with contractors and ask questions

Step 1: Define Your Why

Ask yourself: Why do I want to remodel?

What about your current kitchen frustrates you?
What do you love that you would like to keep?

This is about more than cabinets and countertops. It is about how your kitchen works for your family. Knowing your why helps guide every decision.

Step 2: Use the MoSCoW Method

A helpful framework is MoSCoW: Must Have, Should Have, Could Have, and Won’t Have.

Must Have – Non-negotiables that make the remodel worth doing. More storage, an island, or better lighting.
Should Have – Strong preferences, but not deal-breakers. A certain cabinet style or appliance brand.
Could Have – The wish list. Extras if the budget allows, like built-in wine storage or smart appliances.
Won’t Have (for now) – Features you decide against to keep the project focused and affordable.

Step 3: Take Measurements

Kitchens are among the most expensive rooms per square foot in a home. Measurements will help you understand cost ranges for flooring, cabinets, or the entire project. Even rough dimensions give you a clearer idea of what square-foot pricing means when talking with contractors.

Step 4: Set a Realistic Budget

Most people spend their full budget and often more. That is why it is smart to decide early:

What is the maximum I could spend?
What is the maximum I am willing to spend?

These two numbers may be different, and that is okay. Knowing them early helps you and your contractor prioritize.

Step 5: Gather Style Inspiration

Start saving photos of kitchens you like. Focus on layouts, colors, and finishes that are similar to your home. This makes it easier for your contractor to give accurate estimates.

Step 6: Choose the Right Contractor

Choosing a contractor is one of the most important steps. Meet with several and be open with them:

Tell them your maximum budget.

When you are open with your contractor about your maximum budget, you empower them to be a more effective partner. Think of it this way: instead of guessing, they can use that number as a blueprint to design a project that works for you. This allows them to suggest the right materials, scope the project accurately, and help you prioritize your "must-haves" to stay on track. This transparency helps everyone avoid wasting time on ideas that are out of reach and ensures the final plan is both beautiful and financially comfortable.

Share what matters most to you: speed, price, or quality. (You can usually have two, but not all three.)
Ask about their team and what they do best.

Ask about the experience you will have while working with them, not just the finished product.

When comparing, do not just look at the lowest price. Sometimes the cheapest option ends up costing more in the long run.
